The Zayed Regional Eye Care Centre (SZRECC) in the Kanifing are of Gambia is a charity clinic which serves as a centre of excellence and training for eye care in the West African sub-region. Shaykh Zayed Regional Eye Care Center provides training programmes for several levels of eye care personnel, including a Diploma in Ophthalmology and an Advanced Diploma in ophthalmology (community or surgical focus). Shaykh Zayed Regional Eye Care Center provides district support to enable graduating students to develop eye care services in their own countries. Up till mid-March, 2005 the centre has screened and treated 4,950 patients, conducted 1,688 eye operations and performed 1,191 cataract operations. It has trained five cataract surgeons, six ophthalmic paramedics, 13 community ophthalmic nurses and 1,200 primary eye care workers. One of the pieces of equipment they use is the Topcon eye camera which takes different types of eye photography such as colour retinal photography, stereo images and Fluorescein angiogram among others. The eye clinic is funded by the Abu Dhabi based Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahayan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation (ZCHF) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
